Mike Redwood PhD, MBA, BSc, FSLTC grew up in a tannery in Scotland where his father made leather for motor cars, furniture, handbags and sports goods like soccer balls. He studied leather science at the University of Leeds and then worked as a technician in tanneries in the UK, Italy and Central America. On returning to the UK Mike joined the Boards of both Booth and Pittards, who amalgamated in the late 1980s and had tanneries throughout Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Latterly he has worked with companies making finished products such as FootJoy in the golf industry making gloves and shoes and ECCO, the well-known Danish shoe makers who have their own tanneries throughout the world.
Mike is a Visiting Professor at the University of Northampton which has the only Breakching tannery in Europe. He is also a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Glovers, a Freeman of the Leathersellers' Company and a Trustee of The Leather Conservation Centre. He maintains a free informational website covering some aspects of the history and manufacturing of leather and leather products.
Mike Redwood has worked in the industry throughout a long career, in which he started as a technician after studying Leather Science at Leeds University and moved into the commercial side while adding a PhD in Marketing from the University of Bath. He has worked in senior positions in many parts of the world and now writes regularly about the industry in articles and blogs. He is a long standing supporter of Leather Naturally and often speaks on their behalf.
