Brief contribution of the organization: ECONOMY OF BANGLADESH
Bangladesh Knitwear sector is one of the strategic sectors significantly contributes to the economy of Bangladesh. It has accounted for around 42 percent of total national export and more than 6 percent of the Gross Domestic Product as of Fiscal Year 2020-21. In this fiscal year, total Ready Made Garments (RMG) export totally to US$ 31.47 Billion, of this figure, the knitwear sector export figure was US$ 16.96 billion. In order to increase the sectorâ€™s export volume, sustain its competitiveness, and thereby contribute more to the economic development of the country, BKMEA as an organization continues to facilitate the sector in terms of making policy strategy, giving policy inputs, and advocating the Government of Bangladesh for favourable business environment.
LOCAL AND/OR FOREIGN PRIVATE INVESTMENT OF BANGLADESH
In Bangladesh more than 97% Knitwear enterprises are locally owned, while the rest 3% are foreign owned and joint venture entities. BKMEA has been strong advocate of developing backward linkage industry attracting domestic and foreign investment. Starting with 100% import dependent industry, the knitwear sector now can produce and source domestically more than 90 percent of the raw materials required annually.
GENERATING EMPLOYMENT IN BANGLADESH
In broad sense, Bangladesh RMG sector generates 4 million employment opportunity directly, whereas the knitwear sector generates around 2.1 million employment opportunity, of these 65% are women. BKMEA has been working to expand the industry thereby creating more employment opportunity.
TRANSFERING/DEVELOPING TECHNOLOGY IN BANGLADESH
BKMEA as an association always encourages its member factories to adopt cutting edge production technology and machineries and install safety equipment. A significant portion of our member units have already installed latest machineries and technologies and thereby contributing to the aspect of technology transfer issue. This approach is also encouraging other export-oriented manufacturing sectors to follow the same path.
TRANSFERING/DEVELOPING KNOWLEDGE IN BANGLADESH
BKMEA is frequently participating in different tech expos at home and abroad. The association is also collaborating with different international organizations, universities, and development partners to bring latest technologies and practices in the knitwear industry of Bangladesh. And by undertaking or doing these activities the association is facilitating its member units to access newest technology and knowledge which in turn increases the productive capacity of the sector.
TRANSFERING/DEVELOPING SKILL IN BANGLADESH
BKMEA has been conducting various skills development trainings under SEIP project and with partnership with several development agencies to both at the enterprise level as well as the fresher graduate of the country willing to build up career in the knitwear sector. The areas of skills development program include: Apparel merchandising, Lean manufacturing, Social compliance corporate social responsibility and occupational health and safety (such as fire safety, work place ergonomics, etc.)
DEVELOPING PRODUCT AND SERVICES IN THE BANGLADESH ECONOMY
BKMEA is promoting the diversity in the knitwear products basket through installing fashion design lab, signing MOU with Foreign University as part of industry academia collaboration approach.
Message on Bangladesh International Investment Summit 2021:
'I hope the International Investment Summit, 2021 will highlight the investment potentials of all the identified prospective sectors of the country. Consequently, the summit will be acting as a catalyst for bringing investment from investors of home and abroad and thereby accelerating the implementation of export-led growth strategy of the country'.
